We would like to inform you that we have decided to stop publishing articles in our blog.

We made this decision in order to focus our efforts on our already existing Instagram and Facebook pages, which have become the main platforms to follow our business.

We are aware that some of you may prefer blog posts to follow the activity of Paris Running Tours. You can still find all the articles created from 2012 to 2019 that show our passion for Paris and especially the pleasure to share these passions with you, visitors from all over the world.

However, we are convinced that concentrating our publishing efforts on Instagram and Facebook allows us to better serve you by offering you richer and more regular content.
We would therefore like to invite you to join us on Instagram and Facebook, if you haven't already done so, to continue to follow our activities. We share not only photos and videos, but also updates on our events and news related to Paris, running or Parisian competitions.

In addition, to get feedback from people who have come to run with us, you can read the many reviews written in TripAdvisor.
We would like to thank you for your continued support and we hope to see you on our social media pages.

October is a good time to enjoy Contemporary Art in Paris.

Right now, October 2019, we have the first edition of the GEORGE V MONUMENTAL exhibition, 52 monumental sculptures on the Avenue George V, from October 14 to November 17, 2019.

We have also the FIAC (Contemporary Art International Fairs), which comes back each October. The FIAC in only a weekend but the "Hors les murs" part lasts longer. "Hors les murs" exhibition of outdoor artworks presenting sculptures and installations to the widest possible audience in emblematic public spaces throughout the city.
Here, you'll see some samples of different creators, from George V Monumental and the FIAC, but also a recent acquisition, a permanent art piece offered to the city, the "Bouquet of Tulips" of Jeff Koons.

At the end of the article, you will find the route which allows you to see all these creations, a nice artistic stroll we did recently.

Explanations, with visible and less visible differences:

9. The Ministry of Finance left the Louvre for Bercy and its open-air parking lots gave way to the beautiful Marly and Puget courtyards and their nice historical sculptures.

10. Small changes in the square courtyard with some greenery in 1961, the old dungeon in the basement has not been rediscovered.

11. The gardens have disappeared.

12. The pedestrian bridge the "Pont des Arts" is no longer the same, it was rebuilt in the early 1980s (remember the Pont des Arts collapsed in 1979 following a collision with a boat...)

13. The shoreline track (George Pompidou track) is not yet there. Created for car traffic in 1967, the track is pedestrian on the east since 2016.

14. In 1961, "La Samaritaine" is still a department store in the capital, after its financial difficulties and its closure in the 2000s, it is currently a major work site for a new life of the building...

14.b. The Central Post Office of the Louvre is currently undergoing a complete renovation

15. The "Bourse de Commerce" is currently under construction to become the Pinault Foundation's Art Centre.
16. In 1961, buildings were present east of the "Bourse de Commerce".

17. The "Halles de Baltard" are clearly visible. These large metallic structures housed the large market of "Les Halles de Paris", which continued to decline in 1961. They will soon disappear. After many changes, we recently got the "Canopée"...

18. In the place of the future "Centre Pompidou", a large open-air parking lot. Renzo Piano's project will win the international architectural competition to create the "Centre national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou" (it would have been selected because it did not propose to occupy all the available space and leave room for a large square).
19. The Stravinsky Fountain by Niki de Saint Phalle and Jean Tinguely does not yet exist.

20. The square in front of the "Hotel de Ville" was more dedicated to car traffic, it is now largely pedestrian.

21. The buildings at the the north of the future "Centre Pompidou" will give way to the "Quartier de l'Horloge".

22. The "Bibliothèque Nationale" (National Library) will become the "Bibliothèque Nationale de France" and will give the current buildings near the Seine. The "Richelieu" site (here on the picture) is still subject to many modernizations.

23. The main courtyard of the "Palais Royal" is an open-air parking lot. The replacement of this parking lot by the famous Buren columns ("Les Deux Plateaux") in 1986 created a major controversy...
24. The "Place du Palais Royal" was then an open-air parking lot.

There are probably other differences. I look forward to your comments....
You will notice that the expression "open-air parking lot" has often been used in this article... Since then, fewer cars and more underground parking lots...

The square in front of Notre Dame was also an open-air parking lot! Paris will make an underground car park to free the square but not exactly where it was planned because while digging, streets of the Roman city of Lutetia were rediscovered!

En français :

Différences visibles et moins visibles :

Place Vendôme in Paris is know as the most luxurious place in the world. This is also the place of many arts shows.
These days, we can see the beautiful pieces of Manolo Valdès (until the 5th of October 2016).
Do you know the Embassy of Texas in Paris?
It was just at the entrance of the Place Vendôme, it is a hotel now:
This Friday of March 11th, our stroll leads us to three interesting places in Paris :

The Canal Saint-Martin

The Place de la Bastille

The Garden of the Palais-Royal

1) First stop, canal Saint-Martin, of which the complete draining offers an amazing spectacle:

For more information, see this article (in French, with videos) or this one (in English).
On the side of the Canal, a little street art bonus:

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">"Assainissement" means "Sanitation"

2) Second stop, Place de la Bastille, where we can find a new device, the Timescope:

If you look in the device, you won't see Place de la Bastille as it is now but as it was in 1416 or in 1789 (year of the storming of la Bastille)!
To know more about this experience, click here. See also this report.

3) Third stop, Garden of the Palais-Royal. Ten new chairs appeared in the nice park of the Palais Royal. Not classical chairs, as we can see in the Parisian gardens, but double-chairs ("des causeuses"), ideal to talk with someone. And double-chairs which have something special:

These chairs have entries for earphones. Come with your own earphones and you will listen to poems:

These days, the sun is everywhere in Paris. It is time to go in the splendid Parisian parks and gardens.
You may know the "Jardin des Tuileries" and the "Jardin du Luxembourg".
Don't forget the "Jardin des Plantes" less central in Paris. The "Garden of the Plants" is the main botanical garden in France and also a very old park, created in the seventeen century.

Cherry trees, Prunus, flowers, spring in Paris!

The place is magnificent.
Paris, 2014, December 29th. A very cold morning (less than 0°Celsius). See above and below the frozen Stravinsky fountain near the Pompidou center.
The Art pieces still rotate on themselves and continue to throw water. This gives a surprising effect.
If you are in Paris, don't forget to go and see the art of Niki de Saint Phalle in the Grand Palais (until 2015, February 2nd) => http://www.grandpalais.fr/en/event/niki-de-saint-phalle
This third weekend of September is the European Heritage Days (in France the "Journées du Patrimoine").
The "Journées du Patrimoine" started for the first time in France in 1984, launched by the Ministry of Culture ("La Journée Portes Ouvertes").
During these "Doors Open Days", each third weekend of September, you can visit places, monuments, gardens and sites which are not normally opened to the public.

Many places are opened, see the 2014 program here.
Some famous buildings attract a lot of people. For instance, you may have to queue in a line for six hours to go inside the Palace of Elysée (French Republic President's residency).

This year, the Zmansky tower, administrative central tower of the University of Jussieu, opens its last floor, and no lines! The entrance is free, and if you are in Paris and it is still time for you, you can go there this Sunday before 6:30 PM => http://www.journeesdupatrimoine.culture.fr/lieu/campus-jussieu-universit-pierre-et-marie-curie Metro station: JUSSIEU.
July, 14th in France!
You have probably heard about La Bastille and the famous storming of the Bastille, one of the major symbol of the French revolution, which occurred on the 14th of July, 1789. Our Anglo-Saxon friends call the French National Day the Bastille Day. Actually, the French National Day refers to "La fête de la Fédération", another major event, which took place one year later in the park near the Eiffel tower, the "Champ de Mars" :
If you click on the picture, you will read the inscription "AUX GRANDS HOMMES LA PATRIE RECONNAISSANTE" which means "To the great men the grateful homeland".

The Mongolian, another great man?

Well, the Great Men are buried in the Crypt. There you can see the tombs of many very honorable persons, as Victor Hugo, Voltaire, Rousseau, etc.
Only two women... Marie Curie and Sophie Berthelot the wife of the chemist Marcellin Berthelot (buried together).
No doubt it would be fair to have more women honored by the Pantheon. The King Louis XIV built the "Invalides", a military hospital for war veterans and unwell soldiers (the "invalides" of war). See this link.

There are nearly 84 railings on the Pont des Arts, each one, due to the padlocks, weighing 150 kg, it gives more than 12 tons of padlocks for the Bridge...

Paris replaces them regularly to avoid a security issue due to the weight.
Well, don't worry too much for your padlock, your love is forever and the key at the bottom of the river Seine is still there to testify your link!
Don't miss the visit of the "Tour Saint-Jacques"!
Exceptionally, the tower can be visit for a short period this summer, each weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) until the 15th of September 2013.
See here for more information: http://en.parisinfo.com/musee-monument-paris/71267/Tour-Saint-Jacques

Even though the reservation starts at 9:30 AM, I recommend to be there early, before 7:00 AM, because the line can be long and only a limited number of persons will access (reservation only made for the day).
It is worth the waiting time, the visit is interesting (in French but you will see interesting spots, pictures, the tower from the inside, etc.) and the view at the top is amazing! You are at the center of Paris, in the middle of the sky!

Well, if you can't go there, have a look to the following 360° video (not the best, maybe, but with many labels explaining which are the monuments and buildings).
The video will stop many times to let you read these labels. If you want more time to read them, you can pause the video.
1. Did they move Roland-Garros at the heart of Paris?
The French Open tennis tournament, Roland Garros tournament, started on May, 21st.
Roland Garros takes place in the west part of Paris, near the park of the "Bois de Boulogne".
Nowadays, it is very hard to get a ticket for a seat (you have to be fast on the online booking). Say that before the 80's, it was easy to get in, you even can buy a seat on the spot the day of the final!

Well, fortunately, there is another possibility to see Roland Garros in a nice way. Roland Garros can be watched on the esplanade of the Paris town hall ("Hôtel de Ville"). If the sun is present, what a nice manner to see the tournament, in the heart of Paris!
Since last march 2013, a giant Tyrannosaurus Rex occupied the "Port de la Conférence" on the river Seine, near the bridge of "l'Alma" ("Pont de l'Alma").
It is a 7 meter sculpture made in aluminium and silvered chrome by the artist Philippe Pasqua for the "Compagnie des Bateaux-Mouches", well-known parisian touristic boats.
By this sculpture, the lady who manages the "Bateaux-Mouches" company wants to promote Contemporary Art along the river.
After the snow, comes the water. Sometimes, often in February, the river Seine is susceptible to flooding.

See how the west end of the Island of "La Cité" is isolated, the place there called the "Square du Vert Galant" becoming, nearly as in the past, a separated island...
Yes, in the past, there were 10 islands in Paris (now, 3 only, including "l'île aux cygnes). See here.

For a long time, the "Zouave" of the "Pont de l'Alma" (statue) helped the Parisians to measure the level of the river Seine. See here.
Look the level on this 9th February 2013, the feet in the water, a small flood, isn't it?
Nothing if we compare to the last very important flood of 1910!
It is said that there is one important flood in Paris every century. Not for this year, happily!Jean-Charleshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17334341983131276128noreply@blogger.com0
